Refugio Road

Santa Ynez Outdoors

Just minutes away from the center of Santa Ynez, the Chumash resort and the increasingly bustling energy of the valley is a serene and rustic canyon, lush with oak forests, a flowing stream, wildlife and a challenging road for hiking, mountain biking, or a drive. Known formally as Quiota Canyon, its entrance begins on Refugio Road just past the sprawling grounds of the Gainey and Sunstone vineyards among others. Just a few miles from Highway 246, Refugio Road reduces to one lane, passing several ranches before winding into the canyon and crossing a creek multiple times before arriving at what initially appears as a dead end. Although the sign says 'Road Closed', this is just the beginning. The road veers past the closure and continues into a lush, vegetation filled canyon.
