McKinley Mountain Road

Synopsis » Go Back

Santa Ynez Outdoors
McKinley Mountain Road cuts along a ridge high above the valley, looking down on Cachuma Lake and the greater Santa Ynez Valley on one side, and far into the San Rafael Wilderness on the other. Riding along this ridge high atop the mountains is like a trip through the clouds. Starting at Cachuma Saddle, the road climbs steeply at first and continues at a high altitude for the duration of the ride. This road is among the highest continuous routes in the region. For cyclists, this route offers the opportunity to ride a well groomed, wide open road with stunning views, yet the terrain is easy enough for beginner riders to get out and test their mettle without having to concern themselves with overly challenging single-track, boulders, or nasty drop-offs. For hikers, the road would be a pleasant stroll that could be done as a day hike, an overnight trip to McKinley Springs Camp, or an extended excursion into the San Rafael Wilderness.
